OUR MISSION AS THE BSCAA

Our Board works to advance the mission and purpose of the BSCAA, which shall be to:

  • Ensure that the Berkeley Student Cooperative (BSC) will continue in perpetuity to serve the cooperative living needs of University of California students, and students from other Bay Area colleges

  • Receive contributions in the form of gifts, bequests, and dues to carry out purposes and activities of the BSCAA

  • Support and assist members of the BSC

  • Engage in other activities and participate in actions that will benefit the BSC

  • Outreach to, and provide professional and social opportunities for, BSC alumni

  • Further the Rochdale Principles and Cooperative ideals

WHAT OUR BOARD HAS BEEN UP TO

Just this year alone, we’ve:

  • Donated tens of thousands of dollars to support the BSC and those impacted by COVID-19

  • Created a fund to offer bail to students arrested for ICE-related offenses

  • Hosted a series of virtual skill-shares showcasing local cooperatives

  • Divested our funds from fossil fuel companies & adopted a responsible investment policy

  • Prioritized our explicit commitments to diversity and accessibility

  • Provided care packages to students during finals, and groceries to those in quarantine

  • Explored ways to support students and alumni in acts of civil disobedience during unprecedented times of societal revolution

BOARD MEMBER JOB DESCRIPTION

This is a working board, where board members are expected to actively contribute to the mission of the BSCAA and the BSC. The term of a board member is three years, and our meetings are held on the third Wednesday of each month from 6:30 to 8 PM.

 

Board members must:

  • Be a member of the BSCAA

  • Be a good spokesperson for the BSCAA

  • Consistently attend board meetings

  • Serve on 1 BSCAA board or BSC board committee or volunteer on a project (minimum 10 hours/year)

  • Be willing to make a financial donation to the BSC and the BSCAA consistent with member’s capacity

  • Be prepared for meetings

  • Have a sense of humor

  • Believe in the mission of the BSCAA

  • Be willing to recruit others to the board
